|I was prepared to not be unduly impressed when I went to see X- Men: First Class.
I’d seen the commercials and knew the premise of the story pretty well. The Cuban Missile Crisis being averted by the first group of Charles Xavier’s mutant recruits.
, the first couple of previews they showed were pretty bad. Some promotional pictures that were “leaked” didn’t offer much hope either. I had a tough time seeing this particular cast as Professor X and Magneto.

By the end of the movie, I had a hard time not seeing them as those characters. Truly some first class acting and character portrayal.
Fox was smart to put so much into this film, despite it being their property for the past 10 years. A lot of folks have given deserved credit to Marvel Studios for their success in pleasing the fans. Fox must have been paying attention and they put their all into this film to great effect.
Marvel’s characters generally can’t do much wrong on the silver screen (we’ll excuse Ang Lee’s manic approach to The Hulk movie he did, clearly while on pain killers We’ll see if DC has any luck outside of Batman soon with the Green Lantern movie. Hey, whether you’re a marvel or a DC, this is a great summer for hitting the movie theater (in fact, I’ll be taking a couple hours off from my affiliate marketing this coming week to see Thor again).
I was particularly impressed by the lack of story conflicts or poor character portrayals. Even the soundtrack is great. There are a few scenes that young kids might be afraid of and one in particular that I found creepy: (Here come the spoilers!)
In a scene eerily reminiscent (to this New Yorker anyway) of the tragedy of 911, a thudding sound is heard at one point in the movie that turns out to be people who are hitting the ground after being teleported several hundred feet in the air.
There were plenty of funny moments as well as moments which were there strictly for the fans. The scene where a younger Wolverine makes a brief appearance had the audience roaring. Dont read if you don’t want spoilers:
As young Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr make their way around with a prototype of Cerebro, finding mutants to recruit, they come upon Wolverine smoking a cigar and drinking in a bar. It took only a heartbeat for Wolverine to respond to their greeting with “Go F#!^ yourself”. Truly a nod to the fans in a clever way.
I will say, however, that there’s no good reason to stay for the credits. I was extremely disappointed that there was no scene after the credits, long a staple of Marvel movies from both Fox and Marvel Studios.
I was appalled at how many people were sending text messages while the movie was playing. This is why I carry a high intensity mini flashlight in my pocket. Shining the light on them while they text seems to get the message across!
All things considered, X- Men: First Class gets a top review from me and you won’t feel like you wasted the afternoon either!
